Burdett Road Eyes Cheltenham Glory in Greatwood Hurdle Return
After strong Flat performances, James Owen’s rising star sets sights on Cheltenham’s iconic hurdles stage.
James Owen’s versatile talent Burdett Road is gearing up for a high-stakes return to Cheltenham’s hurdles in the Unibet Greatwood Hurdle next month. Known for his prowess on the Flat, where he clinched a Royal Ascot win at just three years old and recently dominated the Listed Godolphin Stakes at Newmarket, Burdett Road will make his much-anticipated hurdling comeback at the same track where he claimed Grade Two glory a year ago.
Reflecting on Burdett Road's recent run in Group One company on British Champions Day, Owen praised his star’s resilience. “We hoped to lead at Ascot, but he was a bit slow out of the stalls. Still, to be only seven lengths behind top stayers was a strong showing,” Owen said. “He’s come out of it well, and his recent Flat races have helped him settle better. We’re ready to switch back to hurdles, with the Greatwood as our target for the November meeting.”
Owen emphasized Burdett Road's steady progression, noting that at just four years old, there’s plenty of potential left to unlock. “The Greatwood is a tough race, but it’s an ideal starting point. We’ll use it to gauge his direction for the rest of the season,” he added.
The competitive Greatwood Hurdle promises a thrilling test for Burdett Road, as he returns to Prestbury Park with high hopes of showcasing his versatility and building on last season’s hurdling success.
