Celandine Triumphs in Sky Bet Lowther Stakes at York
Celandine Triumphs with Gritty Front-Running Performance in Sky Bet Lowther Stakes, Eyes Cheveley Park Stakes Next.
Celandine displayed determination to clinch a commanding front-running triumph in the Sky Bet Lowther Stakes at York.
Starting at 13-2 for trainer Ed Walker and jockey Tom Marquand, Celandine returned to fillies-only competition after securing third place in the Prix Robert Papin and fourth in the Molecomb Stakes in her last two outings.
She made a quick start for Marquand, who was content to lead the pack, conserving a bit of energy as Celandine fended off all competitors in the six-furlong race.
Time For Sandals launched a late surge in the final half-furlong, but Celandine held on to clinch victory by a neck. Queen Mary Stakes winner Leovanni finished a length and a half behind in third, while favorite Heavens Gate settled for fourth place.
Betfair has adjusted the winner's odds, making her, a daughter of Kingman, an 8-1 contender from the previous 16-1 for the Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket next month.
