Charlie Hills Hopes for Soft Ground Boost in Superior Mile Stakes
But suitable ground will be key at Haydock.
Charlie Hills is pinning his hopes on soft ground benefiting Cicero's Gift as the colt aims to regain form in the Best Odds On The Betfair Exchange Superior Mile Stakes at Haydock.
Cicero's Gift Seeks Return to Form
Cicero's Gift, a son of Muhaarar, has long been regarded as a promising talent. Following an impressive start to his career with three wins, he competed in the St James's Palace Stakes last year. After a layoff, he made a successful return by defeating Holloway Boy at Sandown in July. Despite a recent defeat at Goodwood, Hills is confident in the colt’s readiness for this Group-race challenge.
"He’s been training well, and a bit of rain would be advantageous," Hills said. "We’ll evaluate the ground conditions; if it’s suitable, he’ll run. Otherwise, we’ll wait for another opportunity. This race fits him well, and the track should suit him."
Clove Hitch Returns After Recovery
Clove Hitch, who impressed with her debut win at Newbury, will also benefit from soft ground conditions. After an underwhelming performance in the Coral Distaff at Sandown, where she was sore post-race, she has been given time to recover by trainer Andrew Balding.
Barry Mahon, European racing manager for owner Juddmonte, noted, "She seemed to need the soft ground, but it’s unclear if that was the issue or if she simply had a minor injury. She’s been given recovery time and is back in good shape. We’re hopeful for a bit of rain, but not too much."
Age Of Gold Targets Listed Success
Godolphin’s Age Of Gold will make his second Listed-level appearance in the Betfair Daily Tips On Betting. Betfair Ascendant Stakes after a near-miss in a competitive nursery at York. Trained by Charlie Appleby, who won this race with Naval Power two years ago, Age Of Gold impressed on debut and is poised for a strong showing.
Charlie Fellowes’ Luther and Hugo Palmer’s Hawksbill, who recently won over this track and trip, are also in contention. Palmer expressed optimism about Hawksbill, saying, "He’s a horse we’ve always liked, and I was slightly disappointed it took him three runs to win his maiden. He’s been in good form since, and we’re hopeful with his nice draw."
As the races approach, Hills and his team are hopeful that the weather will align with their horses' preferences, setting the stage for an exciting day of competition at Haydock.
