City Of Troy Prepares for Breeders' Cup Classic Challenge
City Of Troy prepares for a formidable challenge in the Breeders' Cup Classic as he transitions from turf to dirt, aiming to showcase his prowess against elite international competitors under the guidance of trainer Aidan O'Brien.
City Of Troy's quest for Breeders' Cup Classic success progressed on Tuesday as he tried out the Del Mar dirt under the guidance of trainer Aidan O'Brien. Despite facing a challenge in the 2000 Guineas, the son of Triple Crown winner Justify has made a strong impact in Europe, achieving victories in the Epsom Derby, the Eclipse at Sandown, and the Juddmonte International at York.
This weekend presents a new challenge for the three-year-old as he aims to transition his outstanding turf performance to the dirt, competing against top American racers and strong contenders from Japan. Following a period in quarantine, all attention was on City Of Troy, who was ridden in a steady canter by regular work rider Rachel Richardson, alongside 11 other Ballydoyle horses and Donnacha O'Brien's promising filly, Porta Fortuna.
Despite his relaxed workout, O'Brien observed that City Of Troy, who showed some warmth, managed the track well, especially following Luxembourg, who is headed to the Breeders' Cup Turf. "City just did a gentle canter around. Everyone was very happy, and I'm happy that the dream is alive," O'Brien commented, reflecting on the hopes ignited by Justify's success.
O'Brien, pleased with the advantageous gate three draw, announced a more assertive riding approach for City Of Troy this time. "City will push forward, and Ryan (Moore) will make tactical decisions on the spot," he said. The trainer highlighted that this race represents the ultimate challenge for the three-year-old, confronting older horses on a different surface and continent following an intense Classic season.
“He's a three-year-old, and while the Classics are the ultimate challenge for horses of his age, this represents the biggest test at the year's end," O’Brien noted. He also mentioned, "We believe he’s the best we’ve ever had, and we've seen horses perform well in the Breeders’ Cup Classic before. It’s a dream, and we must wait and see if it materializes." As Saturday approaches, the anticipation for City Of Troy’s pursuit of triumph in the Breeders’ Cup Classic continues.
