Content Triumphs in Yorkshire Oaks, O'Brien Matches Record
Aidan O'Brien's Content Triumphs at Yorkshire Oaks, Galileo's 100th Group One Winner Edges Past Rivals in Thrilling Finish.
Content avenged her defeat in the Irish Oaks by besting You Got To Me to seize victory in the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks held at York.
As a daughter of Galileo and the dual Nunthorpe winner Mecca's Angel, it was quite fitting that Aidan O'Brien's filly experienced her finest moment on the Knavesmire, achieving the biggest victory of her career.
Initially, Ryan Moore kept Content keen, while Port Fairy, her stablemate, set the early pace alongside William Haggas' Sea Theme, drawing attention to Emily Upjohn as the runners approached the straight.
John and Thady Gosden's mare, under the guidance of Kieran Shoemark, effortlessly moved to the forefront. However, Curragh's top two, You Got To Me and Content (3-1 favourite), were always in close contention, as the trio engaged in a thrilling three-way battle in the closing stages.
As the finish line neared, Content and Ralph Beckett's Classic heroine managed to move ahead of the eventual third-place finisher, Emily Upjohn. However, this time it was the Ballydoyle filly who went the extra mile to secure victory, marking the late and legendary Galileo's 100th individual Group One winner.
This victory marked O'Brien's record-equalling ninth win in the Yorkshire Oaks, and his fourth triumph in the mile-and-a-half event in the last five years.
