End of an Era: Roger Varian Loses 10 Horses in Major Sheikh Obaid Split

Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Ends Nine-Year Association with Roger Varian, Removing All 10 Horses from Carlburg Stables

Roger Varian has announced the departure of all 10 horses owned by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid from his Carlburg Stables in Newmarket. This marks the end of a highly successful nine-year partnership that saw them secure seven top-tier victories.

Among the horses trained by Varian under Sheikh Obaid’s ownership, the most notable was Postponed. The talented thoroughbred achieved remarkable success in 2016, claiming victories in prestigious races like the Sheema Classic, Coronation Cup, and Juddmonte International. These wins, highlighted by Postponed's iconic yellow and black spotted silks, etched the horse's name in the annals of racing history.

A statement on www.varianstable.com read: 'I can confirm that Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum has ended his support of my stable. The 10 horses that he currently had in training with me departed today.'

In an official statement on the Varian Stable website, Roger Varian expressed his deep appreciation for the opportunities provided by Sheikh Obaid. “I would like to convey my sincere thanks to Sheikh Obaid for all the opportunities that he has given me over the last nine years,” Varian shared. “Together, we have enjoyed a long and fruitful association, with many wonderful days in Britain, especially at Royal Ascot, and overseas, including seven Group One victories.”

Varian also emphasized the significant impact of their collaboration on both the British and international racing scenes. He highlighted the Sheikh's unwavering passion for the sport, noting, “Sheikh Obaid is a passionate and committed supporter of racing across the globe, and I wish him and his horses all the best in the future.”

Despite the loss of these high-profile horses, Varian reassured his team and supporters that Carlburg Stables remains fully focused on continuing its successful season. “It is important to note that myself and the team here at Carlburg remain fully focused on continuing our successful season. Our stable currently houses a top-class miler in Charyn and a British Classic winner in Elmalka, along with a roster of other highly talented horses,” Varian said.

He concluded by expressing gratitude to the stable’s remaining owners, reaffirming their commitment to delivering success in the coming months and years. “We are very grateful to all of our owners and look forward to rewarding their ongoing support over the coming months and years,” Varian added.
