Eydon Aims for Redemption at Newmarket in James Seymour Stakes

After a series of setbacks, former Derby contender Eydon returns to Newmarket, seeking victory in the German Group One Racecourses James Seymour Stakes.

Eydon, once a promising Derby contender, is poised to make his return to Newmarket on Saturday. He aims to build on his encouraging performance at Ayr in the German Group One Racecourses James Seymour Stakes. As the progeny of Make Believe, Eydon began his career with a strong showing at Newmarket, securing a win in the Feilden Stakes in 2022 and placing fourth in the 2000 Guineas on the Rowley Mile the following month under trainer Roger Varian. However, his path has been hindered by injuries and challenges.

Now under the guidance of Andrew Balding, Eydon has raced only twice since vying for Classic honors against Coroebus. Although he did not fare well in the Winter Derby earlier this year, his recent performance at Ayr was more promising, as he was narrowly defeated by just half a length in the Doonside Cup in September.

As he gets ready to race again at the Listed level in Newmarket, his team is optimistic about his prospects, particularly since he is the joint-highest rated among the five competitors. "Hector Crouch will be riding, and we're hopeful for a good performance," said Ted Voute, racing adviser to Eydon's owner, Prince Faisal. "The owner has been very patient, and we would love to see him continue racing and perhaps secure a significant win."

Voute stressed the importance of a gradual approach, stating, "It's about taking small steps first, and it would be fantastic to win another Listed race. If everything goes well, we would likely wait until next year for the next move." While the ground conditions will be different from those in the Feilden Stakes, Eydon's team remains optimistic about his prospects, saying, "He's the highest rated, and we're hoping for the best."
