Fact To File and Spillane's Tower Shine in John Durkan Chase

Fact To File and Spillane’s Tower shine in the Grade One John Durkan Memorial Chase at Punchestown, signaling their potential as future stars in jump racing and showcasing JP McManus’ talent for developing elite horses.

At Punchestown, JP McManus' Fact To File and Spillane's Tower demonstrated their talent and potential during the Grade One John Durkan Memorial Chase. The Martinstown team, under the guidance of the esteemed owner McManus, celebrated an exhilarating one-two finish that delighted racing fans on Sunday. As the excitement settles, attention now turns to what the future holds for these second-season chasers.

Frank Berry, the trusted racing manager for McManus, shared his profound satisfaction regarding the performances of the two promising horses. While speaking on the Nick Luck Daily Podcast on Monday, Berry reminisced about the pair's accomplishments. “It was an excellent race. JP really enjoyed it, and he was thrilled with how both horses performed. From the last fence to the finish line, it was a straightforward experience, and one can only be pleased with both of them.”

Fact To File, steered by Mark Walsh, exhibited a maturity that surpassed his experience, while Spillane’s Tower showcased resilience and tenacity throughout their fierce competition. This thrilling race highlighted their promise as formidable contenders in open company.

Berry acknowledged that it was challenging to predict expectations leading up to the race. “It was difficult to determine what to anticipate. Willie (Mullins) believed that many of his horses required a race, and Jimmy Mangan suspected that Spillane’s Tower may have been slightly unprepared. On paper, Fastorslow appeared to be the one to beat,” he stated.

In spite of the initial ambiguity, both horses produced performances that showcased their potential. Fact To File, in particular, demonstrated remarkable progress since his time as a novice. “Mark mentioned that he was much more settled this time. Last season, he tended to pull a bit, but returning to a distance of two-and-a-half miles proved to be a true test. Other than missing the ditch at the bottom of the hill, his jumping was commendable,” Berry remarked.

Spillane's Tower also managed the shorter distance impressively, demonstrating a combination of endurance and nimbleness that is likely to benefit him in upcoming races.

The Punchestown course, characterized by its rolling landscape and challenging jumps, effectively distinguishes the serious contenders from those who may not be up to the mark. Both Fact To File and Spillane's Tower rose impressively to this challenge, with Berry also giving a nod to Galopin Des Champs. "He tends to be somewhat vulnerable at Punchestown, but he pushed them along and was still in contention at the last fence. He sets the standard, and it's important to acknowledge how well he performed," Berry remarked.

Looking forward, the Martinstown team is presented with the fortunate task of managing two outstanding prospects. Berry shared that conversations regarding their future plans are currently taking place. “I haven’t had the chance to discuss with the boss yet, but ideally, we’d prefer to separate them. The firm ground has caused delays in their starts this year, making Sunday their first genuine opportunity to compete,” he noted.

Although it's unlikely that either horse will participate in the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase at Kempton, Leopardstown's Christmas Festival is becoming an attractive prospect. Berry noted, "I would be surprised if Fact To File doesn't head to Leopardstown. Regarding Spillane's Tower, we will evaluate how he recovers from the race before making a decision."

The priority continues to be the well-being of the horses as the team plans their upcoming campaigns. “The key is to make sure they are in excellent condition. Fact To File experienced a minor setback, but he found his second wind and raced to the finish. It’s hard not to be satisfied with that,” Berry concluded.

The John Durkan has paved the way for an exhilarating season ahead, with Fact To File and Spillane's Tower emerging as two of the most promising talents in jump racing. Their performances not only showcased their inherent skill but also underscored JP McManus' remarkable ability to discover and develop top-tier talent. As the National Hunt season progresses, all attention will be on these emerging stars as they strive to etch their names into the annals of racing history.
