Cheltenham favorite Fugitif gears up for the Paddy Power Gold Cup with renewed vigor after a summer break. Trainer Richard Hobson is optimistic about a strong performance, aiming to improve on past setbacks.
Richard Hobson reports that Cheltenham regular, Fugitif, is in good spirits as he gets ready to return to Prestbury Park for the Paddy Power Gold Cup. The nine-year-old finished fourth behind Stage Star in last season's competition before achieving an exciting victory in the December Gold Cup. He also put on a strong performance, finishing third in January's Clarence House Chase. However, Hobson mentioned that these efforts took a toll, causing Fugitif to be withdrawn in the Ryanair and Aintree races.
Following a summer break, Fugitif is in top form and ready to make another bid for the Paddy Power Gold Cup on November 16. 'Everything is prepared for him,' Hobson said. 'He is in excellent condition, everything is looking positive with Fugitif, and we are eager with anticipation.'
Hobson recognized that Fugitif faced a tough race in the Clarence House, which was meant to prepare him for the Festival, but it ended up exhausting him, affecting his performance in the December Gold Cup. 'We gave him an extended break to rejuvenate him, and we're eager to see him back in action. He loves Cheltenham; he might have just been worn out by March, but he's a happy horse at the moment.'
Two seasons ago, Fugitif was the runner-up in several major handicaps at Cheltenham, including the Plate at the 2023 Festival. He finally achieved victory there last December, making a remarkable comeback to narrowly defeat his old rival Il Ridoto at the finish line. Hobson mentioned that they intend to change their strategy this time around. 'We've made a few adjustments because holding him back like that isn't his true style. I believe we've resolved that issue now, and we're optimistic to see a different performance from him than what was observed towards the end of last season.'
