Goliath's Global Quest to Next Stop the Preis von Europa
Impressive King George winner had been in contention for Champions Day.
Goliath’s globetrotting adventure continues with his next destination being the 62nd Preis von Europa, set to take place in Cologne, Germany, on September 22. This impressive gelding, who recently claimed victory in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, is also poised to compete in the prestigious Japan Cup after his European engagements.
Trained by Francis-Henri Graffard, Goliath had been a strong contender for the upcoming Champion Stakes on Qipco British Champions Day, with odds as low as 6-1 for a return to Ascot. He was also a potential entrant for the Prix Foy this weekend but was withdrawn following Wednesday's forfeits for Sunday’s races at ParisLongchamp.
Instead, Goliath's new majority owner, John Stewart, has devised an ambitious global racing plan. “He’s headed to Germany next, and I will be at the race,” said Stewart, who is eager for Goliath to become the flagship horse for his Resolute Racing operation. Plans are even underway for a Goliath merchandise range aligned with his Japan Cup aspirations. “This will be my first time seeing him in action, and I’m really excited about that opportunity,” he added.
Following the Preis von Europa, Goliath’s primary target will be the Japan Cup on November 24, where he aims to become the first French-trained winner since Le Glorieux achieved this feat for Robert Collet in 1987.
Stewart acquired a significant stake in Goliath from Philip Baron von Ullmann after the gelding’s decisive King George victory, and he expressed his enthusiasm for competing at the highest level across the globe. “We’re excited about this journey,” he said. “When I witnessed his impressive win against top competitors like Auguste Rodin and some of Europe’s best horses, I immediately pursued securing the majority interest.”
He emphasized his commitment to international racing, stating, “I want to ensure that the best horses are entered in the best races worldwide and campaigned competitively. That’s something I feel has been lacking in racing lately.” Stewart envisions a future for Goliath that includes races in Japan, Hong Kong, Dubai, and even Australia and the US, showcasing the gelding’s exceptional talent on a global stage.
