Gregory Eyes a French Adventure as Connections Contemplate Prix du Cadran Gamble

Connections eyeing trip to ParisLongchamp in early October if weather stays fair.
Gregory, a standout for Wathnan Racing, might soon be heading to France as his connections weigh the risk of ground conditions for a potential run in the prestigious Prix du Cadran during Arc weekend.
The son of Golden Horn, trained by John and Thady Gosden, has already made a name for himself by securing Wathnan Racing’s first major victory at Royal Ascot in 2023 with a win in the Queen's Vase. He continued to show promise, finishing a respectable fifth in the St Leger later that year. This season, Gregory has established himself as a solid performer in the staying ranks, with his only blemish being a less-than-ideal run in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. Since then, he has bounced back with strong finishes in both the Goodwood Cup and the Lonsdale Cup at York.
After Gregory’s impressive performance behind Vauban at York, his team is considering giving him a shot at the Prix du Cadran at ParisLongchamp in early October. This race would test his endurance over two and a half miles, a distance that could suit him well following his Ascot disappointment. However, the decision to run will hinge on the weather, as Gregory thrives on quick ground.
Richard Brown, Wathnan's European racing manager, expressed optimism about Gregory's prospects. "He ran a great race and needs every yard of two miles. We might wait and look at the Cadran because he just keeps grinding," said Brown. "There was an excuse at Ascot, and I think he will stay two and a half. I would look forward to seeing him over the extreme distance."
Brown also acknowledged the gamble involved, noting that Gregory’s success would depend heavily on dry conditions in Paris. "He definitely wants quick ground, so it is a bit of a gamble whether we wait for the Cadran or not. He's in at Ascot, but I don't think the ground will be suitable there. We might gamble on it not coming up soft during the Arc meeting."
Additionally, Courage Mon Ami, another star for Wathnan Racing and last year’s Gold Cup winner, is also being considered for the Cadran after being sidelined this season due to a setback. "He's back in training, and we won't be in any rush," said Brown. "The Cadran is in the back of our minds, but he will be given all the time he needs. It’s positive that he is back in training, and we’re cautiously optimistic."
With the Arc weekend looming, Gregory's connections face a pivotal decision—whether to roll the dice on favorable weather or pursue alternative plans.
