Heavy Ground May Keep Detain from Doncaster Race

Detain's Futurity Trophy run at risk due to potential heavy ground: Gosden team prioritizes horse's early career conditions at Doncaster.

Detain might not compete in the William Hill Futurity Trophy at Doncaster next week due to heavy ground conditions. Trained by John and Thady Gosden, he is the half-brother of St Leger runner-up Arrest and has had an excellent beginning to his racing career.

He made a victorious debut at Kempton in August and recently went back to the Sunbury track to win by seven lengths, despite carrying a penalty. While soft ground wouldn't be too much of a concern for connections, if the ground turned heavy, they would probably reconsider running him.

Barry Mahon of owners Juddmonte stated: "Doncaster is being considered for Detain, provided he is fit and well. One possible obstacle is the condition of the track. John and Thady have expressed their preference against running him on heavy ground at this point in his career. Although he has won twice on the all-weather, indicating his preference for a good surface, being a brother to Arrest, a bit of softness in the ground should not pose an issue. However, we would prefer to avoid heavy ground for him at this stage of his development."
