Hollie Doyle to Ride Sea King in Melbourne Cup
Hollie Doyle is set to ride Sea King in the Melbourne Cup after the horse's impressive Bendigo Cup win. Trainer Harry Eustace sees Doyle as a key asset for the race, pending veterinary approval.
Hollie Doyle is set to team up with Sea King in the upcoming Melbourne Cup after Harry Eustace's gelding secured his spot in the esteemed race with an impressive victory in the Bendigo Cup. The five-year-old, making his debut for Eustace after transferring from Sir Mark Prescott in Britain, demonstrated his potential by securing a commanding win in the Group Three contest, bringing his record to five victories from 19 starts, including a notable sixth place in the Ebor.
In a conversation with Grosvenor Sport, Eustace shared his enthusiasm about Sea King's chances for the Cup, which depend on successful veterinary scans. 'We are eagerly looking forward to entering him in the Cup,' he said. 'The form from the Ebor looks promising, and I believe the two-mile distance will suit him well. If he can perform like he did today under Hollie, we have a strong chance.'
Since regular jockey Declan Bates is unable to meet the weight requirements for the Cup, Eustace has chosen Doyle to take the ride, considering her a significant asset. The trainer commented, 'It was thrilling to witness him dominate at Bendigo, and this victory represents a substantial milestone for our team, marking our first Group race win.'
Sea King is scheduled for CT scans on Thursday to ascertain his eligibility for Tuesday's Cup. Eustace is optimistic, noting, 'He’s passed them before, and since he’s not a younger horse, we’re hopeful he’ll pass once more.'
