James McDonald Aims for Glory with Lady Laguna in Winterbottom

As the Australian racing season heats up, jockey James McDonald teams up with the exceptional mare Lady Laguna for the prestigious Winterbottom Stakes, aiming for triumph amidst the unique challenges of Perth's racing circuit.

As the Australian racing season for 2023-24 gains momentum, one jockey ready to make a notable impression in the Group 1 MCA Polytrack-Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) in Perth is James McDonald. After achieving a double victory at Group 2 level in Hong Kong, McDonald is back on the Australian circuit, set to ride the highly talented mare Lady Laguna, trained by Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald.

An experienced jockey known for maximizing the potential of his horses, McDonald’s collaboration with Lady Laguna is set to be one of the most thrilling narratives in the Winterbottom Stakes. The mare, owned by OTI Racing, has demonstrated remarkable talent, securing victory in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) earlier this year, following wins on Magic Millions Day at the Gold Coast and in the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill. With McDonald back in the saddle, there is great optimism that the mare will continue her impressive form in the $1.5 million race.

Terry Henderson, the CEO of OTI Racing, believes that bringing McDonald on board for this significant race greatly enhances the mare's chances. "Having James involved is truly invaluable," Henderson remarked to Racing WA Thoroughbreds. "He regularly rides for both Annabel and Rob, and his previous victory with Lady Laguna speaks volumes about the rapport they share."

However, like any premier racing event, the Winterbottom Stakes presents distinct challenges for the skilled mare. Lady Laguna, who performs best when racing in a right-handed direction, could experience a minor drawback due to the left-handed layout of the track. Nonetheless, Henderson is optimistic that McDonald’s expertise and experience will help alleviate this issue. “If anyone can help her adjust to the left-handed course, it’s James,” he stated.

Lady Laguna's participation in Perth may go beyond the Winterbottom Stakes, as there is a chance for her to compete in the Gold Rush (1400m) as well. Henderson mentioned that although the mare was not at her best during her last performance in the Champions Sprint at Flemington, she approaches the Winterbottom Stakes feeling revitalized. "She’s in excellent condition," he stated, "and this could be her opportunity to showcase her abilities once more at the highest level."

Henderson has a deep-rooted connection to racing in Perth, highlighted by his past Group 1 achievements such as Send Me An Angel's triumph in the WA Oaks in 1986 and Gailo Chop's narrow second-place finish in the 2019 Kingston Town Classic. His understanding of the unique challenges of racing in Perth emphasizes the importance of Lady Laguna's pursuit of victory in the Winterbottom Stakes, setting the scene for what is expected to be an exciting competition.
