After suffering a brain injury in a fall at Worcester on Sunday, amateur jockey Lauren Keen-Hawkins has been released from intensive care.
Important to Kim Bailey's team, Keen-Hawkins was tying the Andoversford handler's Faerie Cutlass when they were knocked down three flights from the end of the final handicap hurdle.
After the fall, the 22-year-old was transported by ambulance to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he was initially admitted to critical care before being transferred to a ward.
On Thursday, Bailey announced that Mat Nicholls, his assistant, had paid the rider a visit in the hospital.
He posted the following on his reliable online blog: "Mat was happy with Lauren Hawkins' appearance when he visited her in Birmingham yesterday.
"Lauren has been transferred from the intensive care unit to a ward. Despite her continued lack of consciousness, she has made reference to strange phrases and voices.
"She is improving and although she has a long way to go, the signs are positive."
"I must reiterate how amazing the Injured Jockeys Fund and their team have been to Lauren's family," Bailey continued. Their assistance has been excellent and greatly valued.
In July 2022, Keen-Hawkins rode Faerie Cutlass to come second at Worcester, and in April 2022, she rode Dandy Dan to victory at Cheltenham during the track's hunter chase night.
