Alfa Kellenic’s Next Big Move: Lidster Eyes Black Type Glory After York Triumph

Rising Star: Alfa Kellenic's Stunning Ascendancy

Craig Lidster’s young stable star, Alfa Kellenic, is quickly becoming a name to remember in the racing world. The three-year-old filly, who recently notched her fifth consecutive win at York, has captured the attention of fans and racing pundits alike. This latest victory, achieved off a mark of 88 at the prestigious Ebor Festival, stands as the biggest of Lidster’s training career. But for Alfa Kellenic, this could be just the beginning. Her connections are now weighing the options for the talented daughter of Havana Grey, with some eyeing an even greater prize: valuable black type success.

A Journey from Maiden to Masterclass

Alfa Kellenic’s journey to this point has been nothing short of remarkable. Starting her year with a win on the all-weather in January, she has since shown a relentless ability to climb the ranks, transitioning smoothly from maiden races to the higher stakes of handicaps. Each race has seen her grow stronger, more focused, and more capable. Her win at York, in particular, was a masterclass in tactical racing, demonstrating her versatility and the meticulous planning of her trainer.

For Lidster, who hails from Easingwold, this string of victories represents the culmination of months of careful nurturing and strategic placement. "We think a lot of the filly and we've brought her along progressively. She's done nothing wrong and we think she's talented and we might have to aim at black type now," he shared. These words echo the sentiments of a trainer who knows he has something special on his hands, a filly who might just be on the verge of racing greatness.

Considering All Options: The Path to Black Type

With her most recent win still fresh, Alfa Kellenic holds an entry for the Ayr Gold Cup, a prestigious sprint that would certainly be a significant test. However, the filly’s adaptability, having won over seven furlongs, gives her connections a broader spectrum of possibilities. A step up in grade, perhaps towards races that offer black type recognition, is very much on the cards. Black type races are the pinnacle of a thoroughbred’s career, as they significantly enhance the breeding value of the horse. Alfa Kellenic’s connections, including the Goodracingco and notable partners Paul Hanagan and Simon Mapletoft, are all too aware of the opportunities ahead.

"The Ayr Gold Cup was a target but we will probably have a look at the whole of the programme now, rather than having to look totally at the Ayr Gold Cup. It's not impossible we will run in it, we're just sitting on our hands a little until we see where to go," Lidster explained. His cautious optimism reveals a trainer who is carefully weighing the potential benefits and challenges of each option, ensuring that Alfa Kellenic is placed in the best possible position to succeed.

The Road Ahead: Strategic Decisions Await

As Alfa Kellenic’s team contemplates the future, the key will be finding the right balance between ambition and patience. The Ayr Gold Cup remains a strong possibility, but it’s clear that Lidster and his team are not rushing into any decisions. The filly’s recent form suggests that she’s ready for bigger challenges, and the prospect of earning black type status is a tantalizing one. For now, all eyes will be on the upcoming racing calendar as her connections map out the path forward.

In a season where she has already surpassed expectations, Alfa Kellenic’s next move will be crucial in determining her legacy. Whether it’s a shot at the Ayr Gold Cup or a different race that offers the chance for black type glory, this filly has the racing world at her feet. Lidster’s careful stewardship and the horse’s undeniable talent make her a contender to watch closely in the weeks and months ahead.

"You can't sniff at the Ayr Gold Cup and it's a GBP 250,000 race, or do we go down the black type route as quick as possible.

"She's still got a handicap mark there to finish off, but a lot will come down to what the lads want to do. I will have my opinion, but they will have their opinions as well.

"There is a Group Three at Doncaster over seven (which is a possible option) but we will cross bridges like that when we come to it. We're going to reconvene next week and see which way we want to go."
