Maher’s Quartet Ready for Another Zipping Classic Challenge

Trainer Ciaron Maher and his partner David Eustace gear up for the Zipping Classic, showcasing their exceptional stable with four standout horses, each ready to make their mark in racing history at Caulfield.

Trainer Ciaron Maher, along with his reliable partner David Eustace, is well-acquainted with success in the Zipping Classic. This Saturday offers another chance for them to make their mark in the annals of racing history. Maher, who won the 2019 edition with Southern France, is presenting a strong team of four stayers ready to compete in the 2400m Group 2 race at Caulfield—a contest that has moved from its traditional location at Sandown over the last three years.

The four competitors—Smokin’ Romans, Le Don De Vie, Herman Hesse, and Mankayan—each contribute distinct characteristics to the race. Assistant trainer Jack Turnbull highlighted that all four horses are in excellent shape heading into the competition, with weather conditions likely to be a crucial factor, particularly for Le Don De Vie. Given the Bureau of Meteorology's prediction of 2-15mm of rain, there is optimism that softer ground will enhance Le Don De Vie’s prospects.

Among the contenders, Smokin’ Romans stands out prominently. Coming off an impressive victory in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington, this gelding has followed a customized training program. He began his preparation at Maher’s rural property in Fingal but was later moved to Cranbourne for a change of environment—a key aspect of Maher’s adaptable training philosophy. Turnbull notes that this arrangement fosters a dynamic training atmosphere, which helps keep the horses both mentally alert and physically fit. With a proven ability to adapt, Smokin’ Romans could emerge as a strong competitor if he remains focused.

Le Don De Vie, on the other hand, is likely to benefit the most from a wet track. Turnbull noted the gelding's near-victory in The Metropolitan last year on a muddy surface, underscoring his preference for rain-affected ground. While his performance in the Bendigo Cup on firm ground didn't showcase his true capabilities, a rain-drenched Caulfield may revitalize his competitive spirit. Herman Hesse has also been making a name for himself with his steady performances. After a strong spring season in Melbourne, he delivered an impressive effort in Newcastle, coming close to winning.

Although he naturally tends to push himself in training, careful oversight from his rider, Fergus, has ensured that the gelding is in prime shape for the Classic. Mankayan, completing the team, poses a unique challenge. While his recent performances have been commendable, Turnbull is confident that increasing the distance will reveal his true potential. He is particularly effective when allowed to take the lead, making his success dependent on executing this strategy—a risk that could yield significant rewards.

For Maher and his crew, the Zipping Classic is more than merely a race; it serves as a platform to showcase the depth of their roster and the flexibility of their training approaches. Each horse brings a unique story to the table, and the stakes are as high as ever as they strive to add another chapter to their distinguished legacy. In a race that is as celebrated and unpredictable as the Zipping Classic, one thing is clear: Maher’s team is ready to give their all on the track, regardless of the weather.
