Onesmoothoperator Seeks Melbourne Cup Spot at Geelong

Onesmoothoperator eyes Melbourne Cup spot in Ladbrokes Geelong Cup, taking on former champ Vow And Declare. Trainer Ellison optimistic about horse's form after strong adaptation.

Northumberland Plate winner Onesmoothoperator is preparing to make his bid for a spot in the Melbourne Cup by participating in the Ladbrokes Geelong Cup on Wednesday. The six-year-old, under the training of proud Geordie Brian Ellison, gained attention with his victory at Newcastle in June and has since come seventh in York’s Ebor and finished fourth in the September Stakes at Kempton, trailing behind Kalpana.

Currently in Melbourne, Onesmoothoperator holds the 32nd spot in the Melbourne Cup entry list, with only 24 horses advancing to the final race on November 5. Achieving a top-three position at Geelong would likely guarantee his place at Flemington.

Ellison is pleased with how his stable star has adapted to Australian conditions, saying, "He's settled in well and has passed every vet check. We're really happy with him." Despite the challenge, Ellison feels the horse will improve with the run, adding, "He's fit enough to win but will be even better after this. We just need a good pace and some luck in running."

Onesmoothoperator's rivals include the 2019 Melbourne Cup winner Vow And Declare, as well as Francesco Guardi and El Bodegon.
