Outstanding Kalpana cut for the Champions Day task

Kempton winner heading for Group One test at Ascot next month.

Kalpana's chances of winning the Unibet September Stakes at Kempton were reduced after her thrilling victory.

The Juddmonte-owned Kalpana, who won a listed race at Hamilton on her most recent outing, is now as thin as a 7-2 favourite with William Hill for the Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes after being beaten by PJ McDonald.

In the Group Three feature, Lion's Pride had already made a break for home, but McDonald only needed to give the all-clear, and the filly trained by Andrew Balding surged ahead to win by a comfortable four-and-a-quarter length.

McDonald, who has rode Group One winners Pyledriver and Laurens, is certain that even favorite Kalpana can establish herself in the elite company if she runs at Ascot on October 19.

"I can see her being aimed at Group One 100 percent of the time, and I don't see any reason (why not)," he said to Racing TV. She still seems a little raw and green to me. She will probably get better with age and time. I would be ecstatic to have her.

This filly has so much more to give, but it's difficult to say how she would compare to the best horses I have ridden. I don't like to compare horses. To be honest, I believe that she has no limits.

"It went well; I felt in charge the entire time and like I was handling things with ease.

She handled it rather well at Hamilton, but today I really gave her a hard time, gave her a flick of my whip, and let her stretch; you could tell that the farther she went, the better. She rode out to the line with such grace."

In the Unibet Sirenia Stakes, Symbol of Strength proved up to his moniker as he battled hard for Group Three victory.

Defying his 80-1 odds, Adrian Keatley's charge finished third in the Gimcrack at York last month, posting a career-best showing, and gamblers were confident they would win this time.

Starting as the 5-2 favorite, Symbol Of Strength first competed in the mid-division of the six-furlong race, but Tom Marquand eventually moved to the middle of the track to begin his run in the straight.

Jouncy was challenging the Kodiac colt to catch, and as he was closing in on his opponent, Brian made a last-ditch effort to take the lead. However, Symbol Of Strength had enough left in the tank at the line to hold off Jouncy for a half-length win, with Brian finishing just a head behind.

After winning, Paddy Power shortened Symbol Of Strength's odds for the Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes to 14-1 from 25s, while Keatley also took the Dubai Duty-Free Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury into consideration.

"It will very much depend on the ground," he stated. All the avenues are now open for him, and we'll be monitoring both of those races. In addition to extensively examining Newbury, we will also be examining Newmarket.

"His form is excellent; the horse is leading the Middle Park betting and finished in the money the previous time around in York."

"With probably everything working against him, he put that to rest today because he returned on time and completed the task.

"He's not just two years old; I believe he could go back to five furlongs. He races sensibly, too, and he might reach seven the following year."

"We will be looking at all the big races now and I think we're entitled to."
