Port Lockroy's Railway Stakes Win Marks Career Milestone

Port Lockroy's stunning victory in the Railway Stakes showcases his remarkable journey from near misses to triumph, embodying resilience and tactical brilliance as he positions himself as a formidable contender in Australian racing.

Port Lockroy's victory in the Railway Stakes at Ascot on Saturday showcased the persistence, determination, and strategic skills that have characterized his journey. This win signifies a crucial moment for the horse, who has been under considerable expectations for some time but has frequently faced setbacks.

This recent victory comes on the heels of a commendable sixth-place finish in the $10 million Golden Eagle at Rosehill just three weeks earlier, further solidifying Port Lockroy's status as a leading contender. Nonetheless, it was in Western Australia’s esteemed Group 1 mile event – the Railway Stakes – that he definitively established himself as a horse to watch, taking control of the 1600m race and delivering a performance that left no doubts about his capabilities.

“We've faced a lot of misfortune with this horse over the years, whether it’s been barriers or minor problems, but today it was all about getting everything right,” remarked co-trainer Rob Archibald. “For the owners and the team, this is immensely satisfying. Annabel (Neasham) has always believed in him, and today he justified that confidence. It’s truly exhilarating.”

Throughout Port Lockroy's spring campaign, he encountered several near-misses. Although he often displayed remarkable talent, making impressive late surges in his races, he consistently fell just short of victory. The turning point came when a strategic decision was made to increase the distance to a mile, and jockey Clint Johnston-Porter was instructed to adopt a more assertive riding style, which turned out to be the key to success.

“Clint delivered an excellent ride,” Archibald stated. “We were aware that the horse could start off a bit slow, so we instructed the jockey to position him more prominently. Clint executed this perfectly, placing him in an ideal spot and allowing him to settle. He could not have followed the plan any better.”

Johnston-Porter's ride was one of the most confident throughout the campaign, showcasing his increasing assurance and a deep understanding of his horse's abilities. By placing Port Lockroy just off the rail and directly behind the leader, Belclare, Johnston-Porter positioned the horse ideally to launch his attack when the opportunity arose. And when that moment came, Port Lockroy demonstrated a remarkable turn of speed, pulling ahead by three-quarters of a length to clinch the victory over Comfort Me and Super Smink.

“This is a moment I have been anticipating for a long time,' Johnston-Porter expressed, his voice filled with emotion. 'Last season, I got very close to winning my first Group 1, so securing one now is just amazing. It’s still hard to believe.”

While the outcome seemed straightforward on paper, Johnston-Porter disclosed the anxiety that simmered underneath. Although he was assigned barrier 7, which many considered a good position, the jockey confessed to having uncertainties at the beginning. "In the first 200 meters, I thought I really messed it up," he remarked. "However, I managed to secure a good position, and when I approached the corner, I was eager to go. That’s when I realized he would be difficult to defeat."

This victory marked Port Lockroy's first triumph in a Group 1 race and represented a significant milestone in his career. He became the first horse trained in the eastern states to win the Railway Stakes since Good Project in 2015, enhancing his reputation in a competition typically dominated by local competitors. Although WA's local riders have increasingly taken control of the event – with the Railway Stakes being held by them since 2016, when Craig Staples won on Great Shot – Johnston-Porter's achievement underscores the talent and depth present in Australia’s national jockeying pool.

Looking forward, this victory marks a bright future for Port Lockroy as he prepares for an active summer racing season. The Pinnacles series at Ascot continues next weekend with the Winterbottom Stakes (1200m), and then the Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m) on December 7. Based on Saturday's performance, Port Lockroy appears ready to be a formidable contender in the significant races ahead.
