Real Steel Triumphs in BoyleSports Munster National

"Real Steel Triumphs: Eric McNamara's 11-year-old star clinches the Munster National, reviving past glory with a front-running victory at Limerick."

Real Steel, trained by local trainer Eric McNamara, achieved a nostalgic victory by leading the race from the front in the BoyleSports JT McNamara Munster National. Previously a Grade Two winner and a sixth-place finisher in the 2020 Cheltenham Gold Cup under Willie Mullins, the 11-year-old horse had a period with Paul Nicholls before McNamara purchased him for £27,000 two and a half years ago.

Even after a notable 33-1 surprise victory in the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown's Christmas meeting two years ago, Real Steel had difficulty finding success and did not win in eight following races, including a disappointing performance in the Kerry National at Listowel. However, with blinkers back on and a more aggressive approach, the 8-1 contender demonstrated his quality at Limerick.

Under the expert guidance of Danny Mullins, Real Steel jumped smoothly, exerting pressure on the competitors and successfully fending off a strong challenge from the 13-8 favorite Horantzau d'Airy, ultimately securing victory by three and a half lengths.

“We are having an incredible time, and winning this race is truly special,” said McNamara. "I won it back in 1999, and it was time for another win! Danny Mullins was outstanding. We had planned to take the lead if possible, and it worked flawlessly. Bringing this horse back to his former glory has been magical."

Real Steel's victory also secured a €20,000 sweepstake prize for Down Syndrome Limerick, sponsored by prominent owner JP McManus.
