Rebecca Menzies Mourns Loss of Mentor John Wade at 80
Rebecca Menzies pays tribute to her late mentor John Wade, a racing legend who influenced her career. As Britain's youngest trainer, she continues to honor his legacy at Howe Hills stables, aiming for future success.
Rebecca Menzies has expressed her profound sadness over the death of her landlord and mentor, John Wade, who passed away at 80. Wade, a significant figure in the racing industry, trained over 200 winners from his base in County Durham before retiring in 2016. He achieved notable success in the 2011 Grimthorpe Chase with Always Right, who subsequently finished third in that year’s Scottish Grand National.
Menzies, who became Britain's youngest trainer in 2013 at just 24, moved to Wade's Howe Hills stables three years later. Recently, she celebrated her 400th career win. Earlier this month, Menzies paid tribute to Wade by sponsoring a race at Downpatrick, surprising him with a small team of runners. The plan culminated with Edgewell carrying Wade's silks to victory in the 'Rebecca Menzies Racing 40 Winners And Counting For John Wade Handicap Chase.' This win was the second part of a double on the card, with Boomslang also making a successful debut over fences for Wade's close friend, Maria D Myco.
In a heartfelt statement, Menzies remarked, “It is with deep sadness and shock that we announce the overnight passing of John Wade. John has been and will continue to be incredibly important to us—not only as our landlord but also as an owner, our greatest supporter, an inspiration in countless ways, and most importantly, our friend.”
She continued, "John and his lifelong friend Maria have played a crucial role in the success our team has experienced since we arrived at Howe Hills many years ago. Knowing John has enriched and strengthened our lives, and his spirit will remain with us as we strive to achieve even more in the sport he was passionate about."
Reflecting on the special day at Downpatrick, Menzies added, “John said it was a fantastic day and the best he could have hoped for. We reply that it was the least we could do for him. John knows we will maintain his standards and integrity as we look forward to many more successful years at Howe Hills, delivering performances he would be proud of. We recognize that without him, we wouldn't be where we are today, and he will be deeply missed.”
