Roger Varian Eyes Prix du Moulin for Stellar Charyn
"Roger Varian's Charyn Eyes Prix du Moulin Glory Against Notable Speech as QEII Prep"
Trainer Roger Varian is considering another attempt at French Group One victory with Charyn, setting the stage for a potentially exciting showdown against 2000 Guineas and Sussex Stakes winner Notable Speech in the Prix du Moulin.
Owned by Nurlan Bizakov, the grey colt has achieved remarkable success this season, delivering a career-best performance in the recent Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville.
During that race, he finished three lengths ahead of Metropolitan, securing his fourth win out of five starts in 2024. This victory represents his second triumph at the top level for the four-year-old miler.
Initially, the Dark Angel offspring was slated to head straight to Ascot for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Qipco British Champions Day. However, the Carlburg Stables trainer has proposed an earlier race at ParisLongchamp on September 8.
"He came out really well from Deauville; I couldn't be more pleased with his condition, and we are considering the Moulin in a couple of weeks' time," Varian said.
'The QEII is his primary objective for the autumn, and we were deliberating whether to proceed directly there or take a detour at Longchamp en route. Considering his present form and impressive recovery from Deauville, we are inclined to choose Longchamp.'
'I believe we'll consider Longchamp en route to the QEII. The ground conditions at Ascot don't really bother us. He's an exceptional horse that performs equally well on both good to firm and heavy ground. He doesn't appear to have a ground preference.'
'Charyn is thriving with a remarkable constitution, an exceptional mind, and an impressive physique. Despite being active since early March, he shows no signs of slowing down.'
'He took a short break after Ascot before competing in the Jacques le Marois, which should benefit him greatly for the autumn season.'
Charlie Appleby's Notable Speech is fully set for a journey to Paris next month, having bounced back from his Royal Ascot disappointment by taking advantage of Rosallion's absence at Goodwood.
The Classic winner completed a satisfactory training session at Newmarket's July course on Friday morning, as he prepares for his upcoming European race.
Charlie Appleby's assistant trainer, Alex Merriam, stated: "Everything went smoothly; it was just a light exercise to get him accustomed to some good ground away from home. Everyone was pleased, and our plan is to head to the Moulin."
