Soldier’s Heart Dominates at Ripon: A Rising Star Takes Charge

In a thrilling display of power and precision, Soldier’s Heart harnessed his experience and delivered a commanding performance in the British Stallion Studs EBF Ripon Champion Two Yrs Old Trophy Stakes. Trained by the father-son duo Simon and Ed Crisford, the talented colt showcased his potential, leaving no doubt about his place among the top young sprinters.

Tactical Brilliance on Display

Soldier’s Heart, who was fresh off an impressive victory at Ripon, demonstrated his versatility and maturity in this competitive race. The Crisfords made a strategic decision to step him back up to six furlongs after he struggled to keep pace in the fast and furious Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood. The decision proved to be a masterstroke, as the colt found himself in familiar territory on a track where he had already tasted success.

From the moment the gates opened, it was clear that Soldier’s Heart had a plan. Jockey Harry Davies expertly guided the 15-8 favorite to the prime rail position from stall five, seizing control of the race from the outset. Davies’ tactical acumen was on full display as he allowed Soldier’s Heart to establish an easy lead, gradually increasing the pace and leaving his rivals in his wake.

With a furlong left to run, Soldier’s Heart had built an unassailable four-length lead. Despite a late charge from Benevento, who closed the gap to two lengths, the race was never in doubt. Soldier’s Heart crossed the finish line with confidence, securing his place as one of the most exciting two-year-olds in training.

A Bright Future Beckons

The victory at Ripon has opened new doors for Soldier’s Heart, with his connections now eyeing a step up in class. The colt is entered in both the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury on September 21 and the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket on September 28. These prestigious races will provide Soldier’s Heart with the opportunity to test his mettle against the best of his generation.

Jockey Harry Davies couldn’t hide his excitement after the race. “He’s come on again from his last run,” Davies remarked. “He jumped great from the gates, and he was more streetwise today. Being here before has obviously helped him out. Some horses find it quite hard the first time, but he has definitely come on and handled the conditions great.”

Davies further emphasized the importance of the decision to step Soldier’s Heart back up to six furlongs. “He’s compact, he’s bred to be very fast, and the step back up to six furlongs has definitely helped him. He was good today,” Davies added.

Reflecting on Soldier’s Heart’s previous run at Goodwood, Davies explained the challenges the colt faced. “At Goodwood in the Molecomb, he was pretty much run off his feet. It was the first time I rode him, and obviously, Goodwood is a very sharp five. When they get unbalanced coming down the hill, they never really have much of a chance. He only got going in the last furlong.”

The experience at Ripon, coupled with the adjustments made by the Crisfords, has undoubtedly played a crucial role in Soldier’s Heart’s development. As he continues to improve, the colt’s connections are optimistic about what the future holds.

Looking Ahead

With the Mill Reef and Middle Park Stakes on the horizon, Soldier’s Heart is poised to take on new challenges and cement his reputation as a top-class sprinter. If he continues to progress at this rate, there’s no telling how far he can go. The racing world will be watching closely as Soldier’s Heart embarks on the next chapter of his promising career.

For now, Simon and Ed Crisford, along with Harry Davies, can take pride in the fact that they have a colt with a true Soldier’s Heart—one that fights with determination and finishes with flair.
