Soumillon Lauds Sunway After Near Miss in Betfred St Leger

Belgian jockey declares: ‘There’s a nice race in him.’

Tight Finish at Doncaster

A thrilling conclusion to the Betfred St Leger had Christophe Soumillon singing the praises of Sunway, who more than did justice to himself with a close third, only failing to claim a podium finish through a narrow margin of 1-3/4 lengths. Coming home top was Jan Brueghel, while Deira Mile and Sunway closed in on him all the way to take their share of third. The dramatic bump made the contest look so thrilling as it seemed to affect the outcome of the race, which the fans and connections were debating over what could have been in case.

Just ahead of Sunway, Deira Mile crossed the finish line for an exciting racing competition that is sure to be looked back at with the intensity and unpredictability that mark horse racing at best. Soumillon, who rode Sunway with precision, said: "He ran really well but when we were fighting it out inside the last 250 yards, he got a big bump from the horse on his outside that meant we lost third place on the line." The jockey's sentiments seemed to be echoed by many watching the game who sensed Sunway's future and told that great things lay ahead for Sunway.

Confidence of Menuisier in Sunway

Trainer David Menuisier felt the setback this week can't detract from bigger future promises with Sunway. Speaking before the official placings were announced, he declared: "He would have clearly finished third and I'd be amazed if we don't get it." Menuisier suggested his horse has proved consistent throughout the season, if perhaps not showing as much in this trial of his mettle as on other occasions. Today, he ran into stronger opposition but remains a horse full of promise.

Thoughts from Menuisier on the race were sure to point out the subtleties that often make all the difference in sports such as horse racing. "He could have done with a stronger pace, but we have no excuses; he was third best today," he declared, soundly in character for the disappointment. The trainer hinted that there are plans for Sunway to compete again this season, all of which testify to his confidence in the horse and its potential for improvement. Trainer Owen Burrows, of Deira Mile, said, "We were so disappointed by the way the race panned out, particularly after the bump that put a dampener on Sunway's run. Burrows reflected on the affair, "He ran well. He would probably have been better over a stronger gallop, but he did bump Sunway and I think we'll lose third."

His candour about race dynamics proved an interesting insight into how different strategies are used, including remarking about his benefit in being closer to the pace of the contest. With owner Deira Mile interested in a possible run at the Arc, Burrows is cautious and optimistic. "The owner is keen to have a crack at the Arc, and why not? He likes a punt," said Burrows, showing that aspirations here remained high despite the day's outcome. As if the message wasn't clear enough, however, he tempered expectations, "I don't think he's another Hukum, unfortunately!" This humility amidst ambition captures the very essence of competitive racing, where dreams often clash with reality.

Future Prospects for Sunway and Deira Mile

The trainers must ponder the futures of their horses amidst the dust that settles on the Betfred St Leger. Sunway received a lot of praise from Soumillon, who said: "He's a very nice horse, he did everything perfectly today, and I'm very happy with the run." His words spoke hope from the lips, telling of great deeds in the races ahead if channelled with perfect training and conditions. Both these horses, therefore, have a long way to run in the season and will be given ample time to demonstrate their skills and talent. While the rider has plans to work out the further development of Menuisier's Sunway, Burrows likes to optimize Deira Mile, so that he could face real races in future events. The competitive spirit between trainers and jockeys is something that creates an interesting mixture of stories for horse racing fans, as every race has the potential to be a story of triumph or heartbreak.
