Take Heart to Make Curragh Comeback on Irish Champions Weekend
Recent Goodwood winner ran well as favourite in last year’s Northfields Handicap.
Johnny Murtagh's Take Heart is set for one final opportunity at the handicap level this season. The four-year-old finished fifth out of 22 competitors behind Crystal Black while being the favorite for the Northfields Handicap at the Curragh during Irish Champions Weekend last year, and he aims to participate in the same race next month.
A challenging wide draw hindered the grey's performance in the John Smith's Cup at York earlier this summer, but he experienced better fortune when he moved on to Goodwood.
Competing in the Chesterfield Cup at odds of 7-1, he secured victory by a neck over Enfjaar, ridden by Ben Coen, and will now focus on the Curragh to conclude his season.
"We have always held him in high regard, but he has faced a fair amount of misfortune earlier this year," stated Barry Irwin, CEO of co-owners Team Valor International.
"We plan to enter him one last time this year during Irish Champions Weekend in a prestigious handicap. He participated in it last year and performed reasonably well, but he appears to have made significant improvements and is becoming stronger.
"We campaigned his dam, who won over 11 furlongs, and although this horse is sired by Dark Angel, he seems to possess considerable stamina."
