The Real Whacker Takes on Betfair Chase After Surprise Win

As The Real Whacker prepares to tackle the Betfair Chase, expect an exhilarating showdown at Haydock, where top-tier talent meets tactical prowess, setting the stage for a dramatic display in the British jumps season.

After an unexpected victory against the strongly favored Bravemansgame in the Charlie Hall Chase, The Real Whacker is set to face a new challenge in the first Grade 1 race of the British jumps season—the Betfair Chase at Haydock next Saturday. Initially planned to compete in the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, trainer Patrick Neville has chosen to enter the Haydock race instead, referring to the dry weather conditions that have affected the ground at both locations.

Neville, recognized for his astute tactical choices, provided insight into the reasoning behind the adjustment in plans. “The King George is set to be very competitive, so running there didn’t seem wise,” Neville noted. “We had originally planned to bypass the Betfair Chase and focus on Kempton, but considering the forecast, Haydock appeared to be a more appealing choice if the ground remains suitable.” He added, “The Real Whacker finished his race at Wetherby in top form, and if the ground holds up, we believe he has a strong chance.”

This decision places The Real Whacker in a prominent race, where he will face a competitive field that features two of last season’s leading contenders, Grey Dawning and Corbetts Cross. Both horses secured impressive victories at the Cheltenham Festival in the spring, setting the stage for an exciting challenge in the Betfair Chase for Neville’s entry. Although The Real Whacker is currently listed at 20-1, his recent performances have drawn significant interest from the racing community, and Neville is optimistic that his horse can rise to the challenge.

“The dry weather is working in our favor,” Neville stated, exuding optimism despite the tough competition ahead. “There isn’t much rain predicted, and if the ground stays in good condition, The Real Whacker has a chance to shine. He’s in excellent form, and since his win at Wetherby, I’ve been very pleased with his development.” This represents a pivotal moment in the horse’s career as he prepares to compete against a top-tier field in a prestigious Grade 1 chase.

The situation regarding the jockey is still uncertain, as Brian Hughes, who rode The Real Whacker at Wetherby, was appointed due to the unavailability of the regular jockey, Sam Twiston-Davies. Hughes, who secured the horse's latest victory, is a strong contender to ride again at Haydock. Trainer Neville mentioned that while a final decision has yet to be reached, it is unlikely he will replace Hughes if he is available. "He was the last person to win on him, so it makes sense for him to remain in the saddle, provided he is willing to ride," Neville added.

The Betfair Chase lineup also includes Gold Tweet, the 2023 Cleeve Hurdle champion at Cheltenham, who has garnered attention as his odds have decreased from 33-1 to 14-1 following recent support. The upcoming race at Haydock is becoming one of the most eagerly awaited events of the jumps season, featuring a strong group of competitors and compelling narratives throughout the field.

For The Real Whacker, the Betfair Chase is more than just another chance to win; it is an opportunity to establish his reputation among the elite chasers in racing. Should the ground conditions remain favorable and the horse performs as expected, Neville's strategic decision could prove to be fruitful, opening the door for further significant victories as the season progresses. The anticipation is building for an exciting race, and all attention will be focused on Haydock as the unfolding drama takes place next Saturday.
