Jockey Silvestre de Sousa Receives 24-Day Suspension for Whip Rule Breach
Former champion jockey fell foul of the rules at the St Leger meeting.
Silvestre de Sousa has been slapped with a 24-day suspension, with eight days deferred, for violating whip regulations while riding Big Mojo in the Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster.
The three-time champion jockey was found to have exceeded the permitted whip level while guiding Mick Appleby’s talented juvenile, who finished just a neck behind Aesterius in the Group Two event at Town Moor.
This incident marked De Sousa's fifth offence related to whip usage within the last six months. His infractions included one instance of using the whip beyond the allowed limit, two occasions for using the whip without giving the horse adequate time to respond, and one for incorrectly using the whip.
De Sousa acknowledged his breach before the stewards at Doncaster, but the case was forwarded to the Whip Review Committee, which has now confirmed the 24-day suspension, with eight days deferred for six months or until he completes 200 rides, whichever comes first.
